Who am I ?
Hi ! My name is Thomas Le Goff. I work at Télécom Paris – Institut Polytechnique de Paris, a group of top engineering schools in France, where I teach and conduct research on AI ethics and regulation. I am basically a law professor among computer scientists (which is actually quite fun and exciting !).
By my research, I contribute to make AI development compatible with planetary boundaries. At the intersection of ethics, digital law, energy law, and environmental law, I design regulatory models to make AI work for the people and the planet. I’m also interested in all kinds of subjects related to AI ethics and law (algorithmic and systemic discrimination, biases, cybersecurity…).
Before entering academia, I worked as an in-house legal counsel at Electricité de France (EDF), within the IP, digital and data legal department, where I was in charge of data protection and digital regulation expertise. This operational background (which is quite atypical in academia) allows me to ground my research and teaching in practical realities and to cultivate strong links with industry in my research projects.
At Telecom Paris, I co-manage the Operational AI Ethics initiative, an interdisciplinary team federating six academic fields (applied math, statistics, computer science, economics, law and sociology) around the ethical issues raised by artificial intelligence. I am in charge of the law courses for Telecom Paris’ digital engineering students and teach AI ethics and regulation in different schools of Institut Polytechnique de Paris (see the Teaching section for more info on my teaching).
I’m always up to collaborate with other colleagues and institutions, across disciplines, on research projects related to AI ethics and regulation, or to AI environmental sustainability. So, feel free to reach out !
Finally, I do offer consulting services for companies and public institutions on topics related to regulatory compliance for digital technologies, specifically for AI Act and GDPR compliance. I can also help you design tailored training modules for your teams, regardless of their background. See more in the Consulting section of this website.
